Bhubaneswar: Cyber Crime and Economic Offences police have arrested two men from West Bengal for allegedly duping a Bhubaneswar resident of more than Rs 81 lakh by promising high returns on share market investments, officials said Monday.
The accused were identified as Bimal Kalindi, 37, and Partha Halder, 39, both residents of Bandwan in Purulia district of West Bengal. According to police, the complainant, Niranjan Boitai, was initially added to a WhatsApp group by the fraudsters, who posed as share market experts. He was allegedly persuaded to download an investment application, “Maverick Cap”, and promised substantial returns. Believing their claims, the complainant deposited Rs 81,30,082 in several transactions.
However, when he tried to withdraw the money, he found the funds inaccessible and the app blocked. Realising he had been cheated, he approached the cyber police.
