Sonepur: Two persons were killed in a head-on collision between a police van and a bike at Arjunpur Square under Sonepur police limits on Khurda-Bolangir road, Thursday.
Both the bike driver and the pillion rider suffered fatal injuries in the crash and breathed their last on the spot. The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained.
Sources said, the duo was coming from Bolangir to Sonepur. At Arjunpur Square, they rammed into a police van heading from Sonepur towards Rampur. The impact of the collision was so great that both persons were flung away from their bikes. They hit the asphalt road with a tremendous thud and both died on the spot. Incidentally, none were wearing helmets.
On being informed, Sonepur police reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem. The police have seized both the two-wheeler and the van and launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.
After the accident, the traffic on the road was affected for a substantial period as some locals demonstrated on the spot blaming the driver of the police van for the incident.
