Two Hirakud sluice gates opened to release excess flood water

Sambalpur: Two sluice gates of Hirakud Dam were opened Monday, informed the Hirakud Dam authority. The decision has been taken to release excess flood water due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchments.

As of 9 am Monday, the water level of Hirakud Dam Reservoir (HDR) stood at 628.31 feet as against the full reservoir level of 630 feet.

The inflow of water into the reservoir was 47,325 cusecs and the outflow 48,737 cusecs.

Sources said that the water level of the reservoir increased due to incessant rains in the district for the last two days. In order to maintain the water level in the reservoir, the dam authorities opened two gates.

Notably, earlier this month, the authorities had opened 46 gates of the dam following heavy rainfall in the upper catchments. The gates were closed on September 18 after the recession of floodwater.

At that time the inflow of water into the reservoir stands at is 1,62,840 cusecs, the outflow stands at 1,27,481 cusecs, a source said while adding that 3,077 cusecs of water is being released through various canals. Besides, 14,362 cusecs of water is also being released for power channels.
