Brahmapur: Police detained two women suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals after they were found travelling by train from Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru, officials said Sunday.
The women were travelling on an SMVT Bengaluru-bound train from Bhubaneswar when they were detained at Brahmapur railway station.
Police seized identity documents, train tickets and mobile phones from them and launched an investigation.
Acting on a tip-off, personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Gosaninua Gaon police waited for the train at Brahmapur station.
The train arrived at platform No. 2 at around 9:30 am, following which police went to the reserved coach and questioned the two women.
The women were subsequently taken to the police station for further questioning after police became suspicious of their identities, officials said.
The identity cards recovered from them identified the women as Mahamuda Mandal, 31, and Chilpi Mandal, 25. Police suspect that they had travelled under assumed identities.
Investigators are trying to establish how the two women allegedly entered West Bengal from Bangladesh and subsequently travelled to Bhubaneswar before boarding the train for Bengaluru.
Police are also investigating their purpose of travelling to Bengaluru and whether they had any links with other individuals.
Officials said the circumstances surrounding their travel and identities were being verified as part of the investigation.
