Bhubaneswar, July 18: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the universities to introduce courses on chemical disarmament and sensitise students of mass communication and journalism on
terrorism.
The National Authority, Chemical Weapons Convention, has said education and awareness should be a thrust area to create mass awareness for chemical disarmament, UGC said in its circular to the universities. The Commission has found that topics such as weapons of mass destruction, disarmament, and peaceful uses of chemistry are grossly inadequate in the university curricula.
“The young students are largely ignorant of important international conventions such as the chemical weapons convention, which have an impact on the welfare of the entire humankind,” the circular said. The universities have been asked to take measures for the inclusion of issues such as weapons of mass destruction, disarmament and peaceful use of chemistry in their curriculum.
UGC has also asked universities imparting courses on mass communication and journalism to sensitise students and faculties on vital issues such as terrorism. Terrorism is an unprecedented threat that requires extraordinary and multi-pronged action by all organs of government and society, UGC said.
