Unaccounted cash worth Rs 23 lakhs seized by election flying squads

Nuapada/Kendrapara/Chhatrapur: Acting on reliable information, the election flying squad seized unaccounted cash over Rs 7 lakh from a car in Boden area in the poll-bound Nuapada district Friday.

According to sources, the police officials on election duty intercepted a Bolero in Boden and seized Rs 7,26,000 in cash during an inspection.

The occupants of the vehicle reportedly failed to produce any valid documents regarding the sources of the cash following which the cash was seized.

While the five persons have been detained for interrogation, an investigation to ascertain the source of the money is underway, the police officials said.

Similarly in Kendrapara, the election flying squad Friday seized Rs 9 lakh from a car on the Pattamundai bypass road in the poll-bound Kendrapara district.

The unexplained cash was seized by the officials after intercepting a car during inspection near Bharat Gas Agency on the Cuttack-Chandbali Highway.

During the search, officials on election duty seized cash amounting to Rs 9 lakh from the car which belongs to Basant Das, the owner of a petrol pump.

The businessman was reportedly carrying the cash in the vehicle moving towards Cuttack. A detailed probe into the matter is underway, informed the police.

With the model code of conduct in force for the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, documents are required for carrying cash more than Rs 50,000, as per the rule of the Election Commission of India.

Similarly, a raid team intercepted a biker and seized Rs 7 lakhs during search near Jagannathpur square near Berhampur in Ganjam district, late Thursday night. The man has identified as a local fisherman.
