Berhampur: In the first of its kind for Odisha, Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) is all set to introduce underground garbage bin facility, a system with semi-underground dustbins placed on the roadside to store wet and dry garbage here in Ganjam district.
Installed at a whopping cost of Rs 5 crore, the project will kick-off after inauguration by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The CM will inaugurate the dustbins November 10.
The news of the installation of the dustbins spread cheer among the residents. They demanded the administration to install it properly and spread awareness for proper use and maintenance of the bins.
As per sources, the BeMC authorities have installed the smart underground bins in 17 major centers of the city. Some of them include Durga Devi temple square, Government Guest House, Circuit House, Binayak Acharya College and several other areas.
“This is the first of its kind in the state. The waste bins have been fitted with sensors that will send alerts to control room as soon as they get filled. The bins will signal green, if the waste level is below 40 per cent; waste up to 70 per cent level will signal yellow and the moment the waste reach 80 per cent, it will signal red in the dashboard and we will send cranes to empty the bins.” BeMC Commissioner Chakraborty Singh Rathore said.
“This is a complete sensor-based technology. So there will be no problem in the maintenance of the entire system,” assured Rathore asking the public to make the best use of it.
This will not only help the locals to prevent garbage dumping in major points that create pollution but also maintain a automated fil-refill process.
“The underground bin system is a great initiative of BeMC.. Now since garbage is stored underground, there is less chance of people getting infected with mosquito-related diseases. This should soon be installed throughout the state and make a better living place,” said a local.
