United triumph in inaugural tie

Bhubaneswar, Dec 17: Cuttack-based United Club started their campaign in style as they thrashed KISS 3-0 in the inaugural match of the Biju Patnaik Gold Cup football tournament, which got underway at the Unit-VI Ground here, Thursday.
Rakesh Kumar Sahu turned out to be the star of the day as he scored a brace to help United register the emphatic win. He opened the account in the 19th minute and doubled the tally 20 minutes later.
After the breather, Sakib Sahadad found the back of the net just a minute into the second half. KISS players tried their best till the last moment, but could not open their account. Rakesh was adjudged the man of the match.
Alisha bags bronze
Alisha bagged the first medal for hosts Orissa after winning a bronze medal in the National Taekwondo Championship at the Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, Thursday. She finished third in the girls’ junior 44kg category among 26 participants.
Players selected
Football Association of Orissa (FAO) selected a 20-member team at Cuttack, Thursday for the 21st East Zone Senior Women’s Football Championship at Kalyani, December21-27. Karishma Oram has been appointed as the captain of the team.
