Kendrapara, Dec 12: In a quirk of fate, the head of an 18-year-old boy has swollen so much that he is unable to stand on his feet. Sanatan Nayak depends upon his parents to complete his daily chores and lack of funds has come in the way of providing him treatment.
Sanatan, son of Basant Nayak of Kansara village in Kendrapara district, suffers from this mysterious disease which has led to an unusual growth of his head. So much so that his backbone has bowed due to heavy weight of his head.
He was a normal child at birth. However, his head started showing extra growth when he was six-month old. Basant took him to Kendrapara and later to Cuttack for treatment. The doctor asked the family to operate his head as too much water deposited in it. Basant, a truck driver by profession, sold his wife’s ornaments and the farmland to arrange money. However, there was no cure and his head went on increasing in size even after the operation.
With each passing year, Sanatan’s head increased and his backbone bowed. Doctors at Cuttack-based SCB Medical College and Hospital advised the family to operate Sanatan’s backbone and left leg.
Paucity of funds came in the way of his further treatment, Basant said. “Though, I knocked on the doors of district collector, BDO of Kendrapara, local minister and MLA to provide financial assistance to my son, they did not oblige,” he said. Deprived of treatment, Santan moves around with the help his two hands while sitting and he has to depend on family for his routine work.
Meanwhile, villagers and the local sarpanch urged the government, non-government organizations to lend a helping hand by providing him financial assistance.
When contacted, district collector Debaraj Senapati stated that he would take steps to provide proper treatment to the ill-fated boy.
