Paralakhemundi: An undertrial prisoner (UTP), Runa Badaraita of Jirang village in Rayagada block, died at Paralakhemundi Sub-Jail Saturday night.
While the exact cause of death is still pending confirmation, reports indicate he had been unwell.
His family has raised suspicions surrounding the incident and demanded a thorough, impartial investigation.
Runa had been lodged in the sub-jail since July 7 in connection with a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case.
According to jailer Kamakshi Prasad Pati, Runa had dinner with other inmates and later complained of feeling unwell.
He was given first aid by the jail pharmacist and rushed to Gajapati District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police have registered an unnatural death case (11/26) and launched an investigation.
Paralakhemundi police station officer Prasanta Bhupati said the cause of death would be established after the postmortem and forensic examinations.
The body was sent to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur for postmortem and forensic examinations.
Runa’s family, however, has sought a thorough probe into the death.
His wife, Janan Badaraita, said she had met him in jail about 15 days ago and that he appeared to be in good health at the time.
The family has demanded adequate compensation, saying Runa’s death has left them in severe financial distress.
Runa is survived by his wife and a young daughter.
His wife is pregnant, relatives said, adding to the family’s concerns about their future.
Relatives and villagers have warned of a protest if their demand for compensation is not met.
The administration has provided Rs 20,000 to the family from the Red Cross Fund as immediate assistance.
