UTP escapes from Baripada hospital, two jail guards suspended

Baripada: Two jail guards were suspended after an under-trial prisoner (UTP) escaped from police custody while he was undergoing treatment at Baripada-based Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Mayurbhanj district Saturday.

The UTP has been identified as Kanhucharan Marandi of Bantalapada village under Badasahi block.

Kanhu was arrested on charges of rape and was lodged at Baripada jail. When he fell ill December 6, he was admitted to the hospital and has been undergoing treatment.

On the pretext of attending nature’s call, Kanhu went to the toilet and scaled up the wall and escaped from the hospital.

Baripada jail superintendent Niranjan Das suspended jail guards Satyabrata Behera and Manas Ranjan Rout for dereliction of duty.

A written complaint was lodged at Baripada town police station in this connection.

“We have launched a manhunt for Kanhu. Simultaneous raids are also being conducted to trace him,” said Baripada Town Police Station IIC Ashok Nayak.
