Valiant Subrat retains title

Cuttack: Subrat Das defended his senior title at the 24th All Orissa State Ranking Billiards and Snooker Championships beating Kunal Agarwal in a nail-biting final at the Cuttack Club here Friday.

Subrat scraped past Kunal 4-3 (127-151, 137- 152, 152-48, 150-127, 96-150, 150-130, 150-139) in the summit clash. Kunal gave a pretty tough time to Subrat from the very beginning and took a 2-0 lead. Subrat then bounced back to level it 2-2. Kunal again won the fifth frame to lead 3-2. However, not one to give up, Subrat fought back again to restore parity. In the high voltage final frame, Subrat used all his experience to outwit Kunal and emerge victorious.

Kar, Barik advance

Ayushi Kar of Bhubaneswar and Soumukta Barik of Mayurbhanj entered the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles at the Nalinikanta Memorial State Open Ranking badminton championships at the ECoR Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Friday.

Ayushi defeated Prankit Shree of Sambalpur 21-14, 21-19, while Soumukta edged out Seba Shree Mohanty of Bhubaneswar 23-21, 21-17.

Orissa fighters shine

Orissa fighters performed splendidly on the opening day of the All India Mixed Martial Art (MMA) Championships, organised by Utkal Karate School in Bhubaneswar. The meet was inaugurated by Bhubaneswar North MLA, Priyadarshi Mishra.

In the minus-52kg category Suraj Alisa, Yogendra Dhrub and in the minus-56kg segment Subham Das and Satyabrata Beura of Orissa won their respective matches to advance to the semifinals.
