Vamsadhara water dispute: Tribunal nixes state’s plea against joint survey at Neradi

New Delhi: The Vamsadhara Water Dispute Tribunal (VWDT) Monday dismissed an application filed by Odisha objecting to the joint survey at Neradi barrage project on Vamsadhara river.

A three-judge bench of the tribunal comprising Chairperson MK Sharma, Justice BN Chaturvedi and Justice Pratibha Rani directed both the states to conduct joint survey of Neradi barrage project with respect to submergence of 106 acre land and submit a report by end of December 2019.

The tribunal also asked both the states to coordinate with Central Water Commission to conduct the joint survey at the Neradi barrage.

The tribunal posted the matter for hearing to January 10.

Earlier, the tribunal had reserved its order on the matter August 27 after the completion of pleading by Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Union government in the matter.

The counsel appearing for Odisha had submitted that the state of Andhra Pradesh has not mentioned anything regarding the 106 acre land where the survey needed to be conducted in the detailed project report.

It is to be mentioned here that the VWDT had April 10 asked both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to conduct a joint survey at Neradi barrage with respect to submergence of 106 acre land after the operation of barrage and submit the survey report to the tribunal. However, Odisha had denied conducting joint survey citing that Andhra Pradesh should submit detailed project report with respect to land submergence and three km backwater effect. It had filed an interlocutory application against the tribunal’s order.
