Cuttack, Feb 1: Ravenshaw University authorities directed students not to take out a procession for the immersion of Saraswati and Ganesh idols starting Sunday.
A decision to this effect was announced after a scuffle broke out between two rival groups of students over the immersion of Saraswati idols Saturday night. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the students. A panel formed to probe the matter directed the students’ union association and hostel students not to take out an immersion procession as part of its measures to contain campus violence.
Committee member Sanjay Satpathy said action would be taken against students found to be involved in Saturday’s scuffle following an investigation. Students found to be violating the directive will face action, varsity officials stated. The authorities had recently formed a committee to contain violence inside the campus, but questions are being raised over its effectiveness due to repeated instances of violence on the campus, sources said.
