Cuttack, Feb 27: Veteran Oriya actor-producer and director Gopal Ghosh passed away Friday morning at the SCB Medical College and Hospital after protracted illness. He was 95.
Ghosh was admitted to the hospital after a cardiac arrest.
His body was brought to his residence in Cuttack where relatives, friends and people from the film fraternity paid their respects. The last rites were performed at Khan Nagar crematorium in the city, family sources said.
Born May 1, 1920, at Raghunathpur village in Jagatsinghpur district, Ghosh won many accolades and got recognition in Ollywood. His movies Gaon Jhia, Sri Lokanath, Bhai Bhauja and Amar Prem got critical acclaim.
Ghosh, who also directed and produced more than 50 documentary films, got the President’s Award in 1960 for Sri Jagannath.
In 2014, he was honoured with the Orissa Living Legend Award. His documentary Black Pagoda was highly appreciated in 1949. He was also given the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1997-98.
The movie fraternity, politicians and film lovers expressed their grief over his demise. “The Odia movie industry has lost a multifaceted and talented personality. The movies directed by Gopal Ghosh depicted contemporary society well,” Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said.
