Barang: In what could be termed as an incident of gross callousness, veterinarians at the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here forgot to remove a syringe from the thigh of a female elk after administering an injection Friday.
The elk was spotted with the syringe throughout the day. The incident invited sharp reactions from visitors.
Sources said veterinarians administered disease prevention injections to two male and one female elk at enclosure #39 around 10 am. However, they forgot to remove the syringe from the female elk.
“The zoo authorities should provide proper care to animals. Friday’s incident proves that NZP staffers have no concern for animals,” said a visitor.
Assistant conservator of forests (animal) Anjan Kumar Mohanty said he was unaware about the issue. Veterinarian Sarat Kumar Sahu also feigned ignorance.
