Bhubaneswar, August 4: Social networking sites have the younger generation hooked. Many video sharing sites in the past few years garnered good response from netizens due to the broad category of videos available in cyberspace to cater to the needs of a diverse audience.
Orissa POST took stock of the overall popularity of YouTube videos which made rounds in cyberspace in the last one month. One among the most popular videos recently from Orissa was the controversial ‘Rangabati’. After the dispute over copyright issues, the MTV Coke Studio version of the song was watched by many netizens.
According to data available, the video has till now been watched by 2,167,653 people while it garnered 24,699 likes and 1,660 unlikes. The coke studio version was sung by famous singers from Orissa Sona Mahapatra and Rituraj Mohanty while the music composer was Ram Sampath.
The demise of former president APJ Abdul Kalam also did the rounds in cyberspace – both on social media and video sharing websites. Many netizens expressed their sorrow on while many jumped onto the bandwagon of those who watched his inspirational speeches online. The most famous among these included Abdul Kalam’s last few-minute speech at IIM-Shilong which garnered 5,31,064 views while his other popular videos included the IIT-Madras speech and a documentary on his life titled A Little Dream.
Netizens, meanwhile, say that video sites give them a good platform to learn and know new things. Sridhi Das, student of English department at Utkal University said, “I am not an avid user of video sites. The last video I watched was Rangabati. It is still trending in You Tube. It is a trend irrespective of appreciation or criticism but people are watching it which I think is most important for any video as number views count.”
“I mostly follow singer Jonita Gandhi on You Tube. She is a very good singer and specialises in rendering original Hindi songs in a western fashion which I believe are even better than the original ones,” she added.
Many hostellers from the city love to follow current affairs, latest songs and other new popular videos on You Tube. Amrit Kumar Panda, a doctor at SCB Medical College, said, “Being a medical student and staying in hostel we hardly get opportunity to follow television; so to remain updated we mostly watch current happenings on YouTube. Trending videos depend on day-to-day developments. Like after the death of APJ Abdul Kalam, memorable quotes from his speeches and his biography became the centre of attraction on YouTube. People started sharing information about Dr Kalam on different sites.”
Speaking about what he loves to follow, he said, “I mostly love to follow latest sports updates, latest songs, trailers of new releases and current happenings.”
The recently concluded Rath Yatra festival was also a popular video and many people of diverse age groups followed all the rituals and developments on YouTube – those could not otherwise attend the mega processions of the Trinity.
