Bhubaneswar, Dec 10: WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty started her campaign on a bright note by winning her first round match convincingly in the Vth Bhubaneswar All India Fide Rating Women’s Chess Championship, which was inaugurated here Thursday. Kiran outwitted statemate Sampanna Hota.
In other matches, Smaraki Mohanty got the better of Bijaylaxmi Barik while WFM Rutumbara Bidhar also prevailed over Sthita Prajna Behera of the state. However Miracle Panda suffered a tame loss against higher-rated A Harshini of Tamil Nadu. At the end of the first round, 39 players were sharing the top spot with one point apiece.
Rutuparna in final
Rutuparna Choudhury entered the final of the U-16 girls’ singles event of the MSLTA Yonex Sunrise Super Series tennis tournament after beating Riya Ubveja of Punjab at Pune, Thursday. She will meet Richa Chougle of Maharashtra in the final.
Rutuparna defeated Riya by 6-4, 7-5 in a keenly-contested match.
Rugby tourney
CRPF, Mumbai Magicians, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi Rebels registered resounding victories in their respective matches on the second day of the All India Callaghan Cup rugby tournament at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, Thursday.
CRPF thrashed Bihar 51-0, Mumbai Magicians prevailed over Tamil Nadu 31-0, Jammu and Kashmir thumped Chhattisgarh 34-0 and Delhi spanked Rajasthan 72-0.
Chess awareness
Approximately 1,500 students of DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur took part in a mass chess awareness programme to sensitise the students about the game on the school premises here Thursday. Women Grand Master and alumni of the school Padmini Rout encouraged the participants with her useful tips.
