Nude, mutilated bodies of two women recovered; rape and murder suspected

Balasore/Berhampur: Despite various steps being taken by the state government to create awareness, there seems to be no letup in crime against women in the state as two nude and mutilated bodies of women were recovered from two separate places in Balasore and Ganjam districts Tuesday.

In the first incident, the decomposed body of a woman was recovered from a bush behind the Rukmini Ashram near Haldiapadar village in Ganjam district Tuesday morning.

Preliminary investigation revealed the woman was gangraped before being killed. The miscreants hurled acid on her face and then dumped the naked body behind the ashram.

The body was eaten up by foxes and stray dogs that had dragged it to a field near the village after which the locals spotted it and alerted the police.

A scientific team and police seized the body after which it was identified as that of Sanju Behera (40), daughter of ex-samiti member Damuni Behera of Haldiapadar Keuta sahi.

Golanthara police then sent the body for post-mortem while a probe was on. According to family members, Sanju had gone missing for last three days.

In another incident, the naked body of an unidentified woman was recovered near the panchayat office at Dahisada village under Soro police limits in Balasore district.

Locals spotted the body on middle of the road and informed police. The Inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Soro police station along with other officials rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.

Though the reason behind the death of the woman is yet to be ascertained, she might have been run down by a vehicle while crossing the road or murdered after being raped, police sources said.
