Woman burnt alive for dowry, 3 held

Nimapara: A man and his parents were Sunday arrested for allegedly burning his wife to death for dowry at Bhainchigoradi village under Nimapara police limits Saturday night.
Ankur Mallick, a resident of Karang village under Niali police limits, Sunday lodged a complaint with Nimapara police alleging his daughter, Mamata Mallick (25), was burnt to death by her husband, Maheswar Mallick, her father-in-law Shiv Mallick and her mother-in-law Jhuma Mallick, residents of Bhainchigoradi.
Police seized the remains of the victim’s body and registered a case in this regard Sunday. The remains of the body were sent to Charichowk hospital for post-mortem. Sub-divisional police officer Arun Kumar Jena and sub-inspector Rabindra Nath Sethi have launched a probe into the case.
Sources said the victim, who married Maheswar five years ago, had been frequently harassed by her husband and in-laws who demanded more dowry. Maheswar and his parents allegedly pressurised her to bring Rs 20,000 and a gold chain and tortured her.
Maheswar and his parents allegedly assaulted Mamata Saturday night after she expressed inability to meet their dowry demands. Then they allegedly doused her in kerosene and set her afire, alleged the victim’s father.   
Three rooms of their house were also gutted in the fire. On being informed, the fire brigade rushed to the village and put off the flames. The victim’s body was recovered from the house. PNN
