Phulnakhara: A 35-year-old woman of Athagarh died while her husband sustained critical injuries after being crushed under the wheels of a private bus near Bamphakuda on national highway here Monday.
Cuttack Sadar police sent the body of Sujata Nayak, a police constable, for autopsy while her husband Pravat Nayak was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
According to police, the mishap occurred around 4pm when the couple was on their way home on a scooter (OD-05-X-7938). Suddenly, a speeding bus (OD-05-AA-9880) from Cuttack hit the duo near Bamphakuda throwing them off the scooter.
“The woman came under the wheels of the bus and was crushed to death at the spot. Her husband suffered multiple injuries,” police said.
On being informed, Phulnakhara traffic and Cuttack Sadar police officials rushed to the spot and shifted a profusely bleeding Pravat to SCB.
Police said they have registered a case (263/18) and detained the bus driver. “We have seized the bus and the mangled scooter as well,” the official said.
