Daringbadi: A woman sustained critical burn injuries after fire from her house hearth caught her saree while she was sitting near it to get some warmth on a chilly Sunday morning.
The victim has been identified as Jharana Nayak of Sarumaha Sahi in Simanbadi village under Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district.
Family members rescued Jharna and admitted her to Baliguda sub-divisional hospital. After preliminary treatment, she was referred to Phulbani-based district headquarters hospital for further treatment as her condition worsened.
According to sources, the incident occurred while Jharana was cooking rice in the hearth. As she sat very close to the fire to get some warmth on a bone-chilling morning, she was carelessness and her saree caught fire from the hearth. Soon, the fire engulfed her whole body.
She sustained severe burn injuries before she was rescued by neighbours, who rushed to her house after hearing her screams, Jharana’s husband Kandu Nayak said.
Though the victim has been admitted to the health facility, the treatment expenses have come as a burden for the BPL family. Both Jharna and her husband Kandu work as daily labourers for a living. Now, the family is under stress due to financial constraints of Jharana’s treatment.
When contacted local tehsildar Bipin Kumar Kalo said that necessary compensation would be provided to the family in accordance with government rule. PNN
