Bhanjanagar: In a shocking incident, a pregnant woman delivered a baby girl on the verandah of a hospital here Tuesday night as no doctors attended to her.
Tension flared in the hospital Wednesday as residents and local politicians stage a demonstration over the issue. They demanded action against the hospital authorities for negligence.
According to sources, Basumati Naik of Hasanapali under Bhanjanagar block was admitted to the sub-divisional hospital here after she underwent labour pain.
A doctor attended to her and referred her to Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital after preliminary treatment due to lack of blood.
When family members expressed their inability to shift the victim to MKCG in the late hours, the doctor allegedly forced them to sign on a form and threatened them to leave the hospital.
After repeated threats to vacate the bed, Basumati’s mother Golapo tried to take the former to another hospital but had to stop her near the hospital’s main gate as her condition worsened.
Left with no option, Basumati’s husband left for his village to arrange money to ferry her to Berhampur. Meanwhile, Basumita after writhing in pain on the hospital verandah near the main gate for nearly five hours delivered a baby girl.
Seeing the scene, a medical attendant out of sympathy came to Basumati’s rescue and helped her in cutting of the umbilical cord. Later, she provided her a bed in the hospital, sources said.
On the other hand, taking advantage of the Basumati’s helpless condition, some nurses demanded Rs 500 from them, Basumita’s mother alleged before media persons.
When contacted, the doctor concerned claimed that she was unaware of the incident as she left the hospital after asking Basumati’s kin to shift her MKCG.
Additional district medical officer Prafulla Kumar Gouda claimed that no one had threatened the woman or her kin. However, a probe has been ordered and necessary action would be taken against those found guilty, he added. PNN
