Woman dies due to 'medical neglect'

Keonjhar: The district headquarters hospital in Keonjhar is back in the news for a wrong reason when a woman died Tuesday due to alleged medical negligence after delivering a baby Saturday. The baby boy has survived.

The deceased was identified as Sabitri Nayak, 27, of Badaposi.

Surprisingly, despite the alleged medical negligence, the hospital authorities sent the body to the village without conducting an inquiry, giving credence to the allegation.

Ranjan Kumar Nayak, Sabitri’s husband, said that his wife was operated upon Saturday. She had delivered a baby boy. All was well and the family members were happy.

Monday morning, Sabitri started coughing and the family members consulted the hospital staff. However, they did not take the coughing seriously. When the problem persisted, Sabitri’s family members had to seek the help of the hospital staff repeatedly. Later, a doctor prescribed medicines. Even after administering the medicines, the cough did not subside.

At night, the family members sought the help of duty doctors and staff, but they did not turn up, it was alleged. As her condition turned critical, at about 2.30 am, the patient was given an injection to control the cough. However, it did not subside. On the other hand, the cough had become intense. None came to attend to the patient, it was alleged. The patient died at 5 am.

The family members said that the hospital staff is duty-bound to keep critical patients under strict observation. In this case, they did not do that, it was said. They family members and locals demanded a probe into the incident.

However, the hospital staff and a doctor denied the allegations of medical negligence.
