Woman dies in road mishap, kin critical

Khurda: A 37-year-old woman died while her sister-in-law suffered critical injuries after the scooter they were riding collided head-on with a mini truck at Bhaliabadi Square, Sunday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Bijaylaxmi Biswal of Lekhanpur in Jankia police limits. Her sister-in-law, Jharana Ranasingh of Bhaliabadi, sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Bhubaneswar.
According to sources, Jharana and Bijaylaxmi were on their way to hospital on a scooter at 2pm. Jharana was riding the scooter, while Bijaylaxmi was on the pillion. When they reached Bhaliabadi Square a tractor loaded with electric poles was standing there obstructing their way. Jharana tried to negotiate her way when the mini truck suddenly came in front of the scooter leading to the collision.
Both sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the district headquarters hospital. While Bijaylaxmi was pronounced dead, Jharana’s condition deteriorated and she was shifted to AIIMS in Bhubaneswar.
Following the mishap, the locals dug the road and burnt tyres protesting the death. The angry mob demanded construction of humps on the road. Town police station inspector-in-charge rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitators.
Later, following an order of the sub-collector, two police stop posts were set up along the road along with deployment of two home guard jawans. Subsequently, the protestors called off the agitation at 3pm.

One killed in accident
Bhubaneswar: A 65-year-old woman died after being knocked down by a car near Tamando police station here Sunday. The deceased identified as Sebati Sharma, hailed from Chandiagadi area in Kendrapara district, was residing with her family in a rented accommodation in Tamando area. It was around 4pm when the victim was crossing a road near the police station here to visit her ailing husband in a private hospital. Suddenly, the speeding four-wheeler came from behind and knocked her down. Eyewitnesses said the magnitude of the collision was so intense that she was flung several metres in the air and landed with severe injuries. On being informed, police rushed the spot and sent a profusely bleeding Sebati to a nearby hospital. However, she was declared brought dead on arrival.
