Woman hurt in wall collapse, husband tries to raise funds

Bhawanipatna: A woman was left battling for life after a part of her thatched house’s wall caved in at Jabang village in T Rampur block of Kalahandi district late Friday night.

A huge chunk of the wall fell on the woman while she was having lunch in the kitchen. She was trapped in the debris and sustained serious injuries. Hearing the noise, her family rushed to her rescue and admitted her at the community health centre (CHC).

The injured woman, Manjula Majhi, (20), was the wife of Laxman Majhi. After preliminary treatment, CHC doctors referred her to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) after her condition worsened.

Laxman, a labourer, could not arrange money to take Manjula to the DHH, reports said. Laxman was arranging money to shift his wife till this report was filed. Locals sympathised with him and demanded that the administration provide free treatment and funds from Red Cross.

Rain has wreaked havoc in Kalahandi district as many areas are marooned. Many houses in tribal pockets have been damaged due to strong wind and thunderstorms.

Trees and electric poles have been uprooted and many bridges washed away. Vehicle movements have been hit in many areas. The situation is yet to become normal even though rains have declined.

Locals feared the situation would worsen as the MeT has predicted more rain in next three days as the cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal turned into a low pressure Saturday.

The low pressure is likely to trigger heavy rains in Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur districts.
