Rayagada: A woman was killed while 22 passengers were seriously injured after a bus named Kamdhenu on its way to Berhampur from Umerkote met with an accident near Katapeta School under Chandili police limits in Rayagada district Saturday night.
According to sources, the bus reached Rayagada Saturday night and stopped to take on passengers. Just before it was about to depart from the bus stand, another bus named RB Coach going along the same route reached the spot and lifted more passengers and departed.
In a bid to overtake RB Coach, the driver of Kamdhenu began overspeeding and eventually lost control and the bus overturned. A woman passenger sitting in the bus cabin was killed on the spot. Her body was torn into several parts due to the impact of the mishap. She was identified as Harabati Bhatra of Bijapur village under Jharigam block.
Chandili and Rayagada town police reached the spot and rescued the passengers and shifted them to Rayagada district headquarters hospital.
Nine of the injured were shifted to a Berhampur hospital for further treatment as their condition worsened.
Police registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem. A case was registered and the vehicle was seized. Investigation into the incident is on, police said. PNN
