Bhubaneswar: A woman, who was allegedly tortured for dowry by her in-laws, died in a hospital here Wednesday night. The victim was identified as Liza Moharana (21) of Khurda.
Liza was married to Rajendra Moharana (28) of Aiginia, Khandagiri February 19 this year. Her parents said they could not arrange Rs 10,000 to give it as dowry to Liza’s in-laws. Her in-laws were harassing her physically and mentally over the issue. She was subjected to frequent torture by her in-laws and husband for non-fulfillment of their demand.
The situation turned worse for Liza after Rs 1,600 was found stolen from her in-laws’ house. Liza’s in-laws accused her of stealing the money. She was attacked by her husband and family members following which she was admitted to AIIMS here Wednesday where doctors declared her dead.
Liza’s family members said injury marks on her body show the inhuman torture meted out to her by her in-laws. The family members lodged a complaint against Liza’s in-laws with Khandagiri police alleging dowry torture.
“We have registered a case under Section 302 (murder), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 498 (A) of IPC. We have also arrested Liza’s husband Rajendra Moharana, father-in-law Ramchandra Moharana, mother-in-law Sushma Moharana and her brother-in-law Surendra Moharana,” said IIC Khandagiri police station Himanshu Swain.
In 2016, Capital city has registered 333 cases under Dowry Prohibition Act – an increase by 246 as compared to 87 in 2012.
Likewise, 507 cases have been registered in twin cities in 2016 as against 278 in 2012.
According to NCRB data, Orissa had registered 3,605 cases of dowry in 2015.
