Buguda, March 21: A 52-year-old woman was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon and then beaten to death for plucking berries at Takarada village under Buguda police station in Ganjam district Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Alekha Alatia (52).
Buguda police registered a murder case in this connection.
However, the killer was absconding. Inspector-in-charge Ranjan Kumar Dey said the killer would be arrested soon.
Alekha was plucking berries from a tree for her grandchildren Saturday morning when a miscreant opposed her and then in a fit of rage attacked her head with a sharp-edged weapon.
Later, he beat up the woman in a lathi and fled the scene.
On being informed, Alekha’s family members rescued her from a pool of blood. However, she succumbed to injuries on her way to a community health centre at Buguda.
The body was sent to Bhanjanagar hospital for postmortem, police said.
