Khalikote: Police have arrested 50-year-old Duhita Nahak for killing her own son. The deceased have been identified as 24-year-old Sukuria Nahak. The incident occurred at Goppur village of Chikili panchayat under this police limits in Ganjam district. Police exhumed the deceased’s body Thursday while investigating the murder.
After her husband’s death, Duhita had been staying with her elder son Sukuria, daughter-in-law and younger son Dhanu. However, there was no peace in her life as everyday Sukuria and her daughter-in-law were regularly beaten up by Sukuria. He was addicted to alcohol and would return home every day in the night in an inebriated condition. The situation had turned so ugly that her daughter-in-law had gone back to her parents’ home for quite some time now.
Wednesday also was no exception. Sukuria returned home and picked up a quarrel with his mother. He then thrashed her. After having dinner he fell asleep. Duhita, who was tired of the daily assaults then decided to kill her son. According late in the night she killed Sukuria with a sharp weapon. Then she allegedly dragged his body outside and buried it.
Her younger son Dhanu usually slept at her aunt’s house. When he returned home Thursday night he looked for his brother. Not finding him, he asked his mother. Duhita then confessed her crime. Dhanu then informed the police about the incident.
Khalikote tehsildar Chakradhar Padhi and police reached the village in the afternoon and arrested Duhita. Then they exhumed Sukuria’s body and sent it to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for post-mortem.
Police however, are suspecting involvement of another person in the murder. “Our investigation is underway to find out if any second person is involved in the crime,” said a police officer. They said that it would be impossible for Duhita alone to commit the crime.
