Dunguripali: A woman broke age-old traditions and customs and lit the funeral pyre of her husband at Tamamura village under this block in Subarnapur district, Saturday.
Parbati Bhue of Bargarh was compelled to break the age-old tradition and lit the funeral pyre of her husband Chandramani Bhue (62) at the cremation ground. Parbati took the decision as the couple had no son while their two daughters have been married long back and were not with them on the fateful day. The ritual is usually done by the son or male members of the family as per the age-old tradition. The development has sent chatters abuzz in the area.
According to reports, Chandramani had died of drowning in the branch canal of Tamamura village. Police recovered the decomposed body floating in the canal Friday evening.
The body was identified as that of Chandramani Bhue in the presence of villagers and police. Police registered a case over a complaint by his wife and sent the body for post-mortem to Binka community health centre.
Later, the body was handed over to his wife Saturday. However, Parbati was caught in a quandary on performing the last rites after receiving the body. “I performed the last rites of my husband as we do not have a son and our two daughters are married long back”, she told to mediapersons. She finally made up her mind and lit the funeral pyre of her husband in the presence of sarpanch Panchanan Bariha and other villagers.
