Jajpur: A young woman who was out on a morning walk was killed after a speeding truck hit her at Ketakia Chowk under Jajpur Sadar police limits in Jajpur district Friday. The accident sparked anger among local residents who immediately blocked the road. They demanded action against the truck driver and compensation for the bereaved family.
Sources said, Barsarani Jena, the deceased, along with a friend was out on a morning walk Friday morning. Near Ketakia Chowk, a truck loaded with stone chips hit her from the back and ran over her. She was rescued by local people and was immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH). However, she was declared brought dead on arrival.
The driver fled from the spot immediately after the mishap leaving the vehicle on the spot.
As the news spread, hundreds of local residents thronged the spot and demanded action against the reckless driver. They later blocked the road demanding compensation to the family. The protests brought traffic on the road to a standstill for several hours.
On receiving information, a team from Sadar police station reached the spot. Currently senior police officials are persuading the protestors to withdraw the agitation. The road block was still continuing at the time of filing this report.
