Woman raped, burnt alive; youth detained

Nimapara: Police Tuesday detained a youth in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old woman who was allegedly raped and burnt alive at Bamanala village Sunday night.
Police recovered the charred body of Vijayalaxmi Das (name changed) from the backyard of her neighbour’s house. During investigation, police detained and interrogated Jai Bhoi of the same village in connection with the case.
Vijayalaxmi had married Debabrata Padhi (name changed) of Tahudi village in Niali police limits three years ago. However, she started living with her parents with her two-year-old son a couple of months back.
Police suspect the miscreant took the woman to the backyard of a house and raped her before dousing her with petrol and setting her on fire. Her father Binay Das (name changed) lodged a complaint in this regard on the basis of which police registered a case and began a probe.
Police sent her body to Charichowk hospital for post-mortem. A scientific team from Puri visited the spot and inquired into the case.
Meanwhile, tension gripped the village with hundreds of residents demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and stringent action against them.
SDPO Arun Kumar Jena along with other officials visited the village and held discussion with the residents. He assured to arrest the culprit at the earliest following which normalcy returned to the village.
Some villagers on condition of anonymity said 12 days before this incident, two youths had taken a woman on a bike and raped her at Dhanuan river bridge near Bamanala-Balanga road.
