Hatadihi (Keonjhar district), Feb 9: A woman of Anra village under Nandipada police limits lost a couple of her teeth in a brutal attack by her in-laws, as she “opposed” a second marriage by her husband. An issue of dowry demand is also involved, according to police.
Damayanti was severely beaten up and attempts made to take her life, her father Narayan Biswal of Chasakhand village alleged in a complaint lodged with the police Saturday. The woman, rescued by her family in a critical condition, is undergoing treatment at the Shalania community health centre.
According to the case diary, Damayanti got married to Prashant, son of Abhimanyu Behera, in July 2012. Though all the demands were met during the marriage, the in-laws were torturing his daughter physically and mentally, demanding another `10,000 as dowry, the father said.
Meanwhile, Prashant wanted to marry another girl of his choice, and this was vehemently opposed by Damayanti. She got no support from her in-laws. They beat her up black and blue and inserted an iron spatula into her mouth, in the attack, which resulted in the loss of her two teeth, police said quoting the complaint.
Attempts were made to resolve the issue with help from intermediates, but this didn’t work. Following this, Narayan lodged a complaint with the police. The accused have been summoned to the police station for an inquiry, investigating officer Indramani Satpathy said.
