Dhenkanal: Acting on a tip-off, the district administration and the police rescued an 82-year-old woman, who was tied up with chains at her son’s house at Kaithapolia New Colony in Kumbhar Sahi here Monday.

The district officials rescued her in the presence of a magistrate and the police and admitted her to the district headquarters hospital where doctors conducted a check-up of her health. The woman will be sent to an old-age home managed by Maharshi Dayananda Service Mission at Gobindpur under Sadar block, officials said.
The incident has sent shockwaves in the area as it has brought to fore the gory details of torture meted out to elderly parents by their children.
While Gangadhar works in Chowdwar, his family comprising his wife, two sons and the elderly mother, stayed at a rented house at Kaithapolia New Colony.
However, the family members instead of taking care of the elderly woman tied her limbs up with chains and dumped her on the verandah for the last three months. The woman was rescued after district collector Roopa Roshan Sahoo was informed of her ordeal.
Sahoo immediately directed additional tehsildar Saroj Kumar Panda and Town police station IIC Abhinab Dakua to rescue the woman. The officials reached the house with police force and rescued the woman.
A neighbour Suresh Chandra Prusty alleged the woman was suffering a lot as the family members without taking care of her often used to inflict torture on her.
The woman’s daughter-in-law Kanchan Mohanty rejected the charges and claimed they took good care of her but tied up her limbs after she developed ‘mental illness’.
The ADM, who was officiating as the magistrate said, the woman was rescued and taken to the district headquarters hospital for a health check-up. She will be rehabilitated at an old-age home. Further steps will be taken after submitting a report to the collector, Panda said. PNN
