Aradi: A 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide following harassment by her husband and in-laws for dowry, police said Monday.
The deceased, identified as Janaki Lata Sahoo, was a resident of Mamatula under Arjunpur panchyat in Bhadrak district.
Sources said, Janaki was married to Rashmi Ranjan Sahoo, a resident of Mamatula, in May, 2018.
Since her marriage, her in-laws allegedly harassed her for dowry.
Her in-laws called up her parents to say that she had hanged herself from the ceiling fan of their house and committed suicide. They further said they had tried to save the life of Janaki by taking her to Jajpur Headquarters hospital but the doctors declared her brought dead.
Her brother has lodged a complaint at the police station stating that Janaki was killed by her in-laws. It is a clear case of murder, not suicide, he alleged.
Based on the complaint by Janaki’s brother, the police have registered a dowry-cum-murder case. The body was handed over to Janaki’s in-laws after postmortem.
Further investigations are underway, said the police.
