Sonpur: More than 100 women staged a protest outside the sub-collector’s office in Odisha’s Sonpur district Monday, demanding the closure of a liquor shop at Nuapada under Subalaya police limits.
According to reports, protesters alleged that the liquor shop was affecting the area’s social environment and creating safety concerns.
The protesters said students, particularly girls, face harassment from intoxicated individuals while travelling to and from their educational institutions. They also alleged that people consume liquor near the shop and leave broken bottles in agricultural fields, creating difficulties for farmers accessing their land.
Carrying placards and raising slogans, the women gathered outside the Birmaharajpur sub-collector’s office and staged a sit-in, urging the administration to shut down the liquor outlet immediately.
The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the sub-collector and said they were awaiting a response from the administration regarding their demand.
