Women up in arms against liquor trade

Champua: Amid allegations about proliferation of liquor trade in many villages under tribal-dominated Champua block in Keonjhar district, women affiliated to 21 self-help groups (SHGs) took out a protest rally at Rangamatia panchayat Thursday.

The women activists alleged that the villages are now flooded with both country and foreign liquor and ganja, which has left scores of poor families tattered.

Strongly opposing the illegal trade, the women visited houses and apprised the people of the ill impacts of alcohol during the rally which passed through Karuasahi, Goudasahi, Nayaksahi and other areas.

Women of Kandarapasi panchayat have got united against liquor trade while women from Silisuan have filed a complaint at the police station in this regard.

Members of SHGs demanded stern action against the bootleggers and country liquor traders in the area.

They demanded that excise and police should conduct raids on hooch brewing units and take action against the accused.
