Naktideula, March 22: Inspired by the anti-liquor campaign by women in Kendrapara district, scores of women Sunday intensified their protest against liquor trade in several villages of the block in Sambalpur district and demanded closure of illegal country liquor shops in the area.
Raising slogans against the trade, women took out a massive rally from Hatapada before gathering at a country liquor manufacturing unit Sunday forenoon. Later, the protesters submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik through additional tehsildar Biswanath Sahu. The women also blocked the nearby road for several hours and staged a demonstration demanding removal of liquor shops from the area.
As the demonstration continued for several hours, Redhakhol sub-divisional police officer Rabindra Kumar Mallick and local police officials reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters.
Before calling off their strike after the intervention by officials, the protesters warned to step up their protests and take law into their hands if the liquor shops in their area are not removed at the earliest.
