World Food Day: Modern methods to boost crop yields stressed

Bhubaneswar: Importance and use of scientific methods to boost farm production, creating awareness among farmers about increasing crop yields in small land holdings, food security and rural development were among the topics discussed at a meeting here Monday.

Organised by Orissa Krushak Samaj (OKS) on the occasion of World Food Day, the meeting at the Institute of Engineers Conference Hall saw participation of more than 500 farmer delegates from across the state. On the occasion, many farmers and farming scientists were felicitated for their work.

Indian Council of Agricultural Research and OUAT organized an agriculture product exhibition. OUAT VC Surendranath Pasupalak said that proper storage of food and fixing right market price is need of the hour. Khageswar Mohanty, advisor to OKS and chairman of World Food Day Committee, said both the state and central government must focus on helping the farmers to get adequate remuneration for their efforts.

P C Mohanty, Chairman of Orissa Krushak Sangha, said despite the government declaration of various schemes for the farmers, they are still not getting the desired returns on their investments and efforts. Many farmers are migrating to cities leaving agriculture because of innumerable problems that have made cultivation non-profitable.

Jitendra Kumar Sundray, Director ICAR-CIFA Bhubaneswar, proposed that in fish production the correct water usage and proper fish net selection will help in high profitability.
