SC gives 3-month deadline to state for Lokayukta

New Delhi: A written order of the Supreme Court released Wednesday with regard to the appointment of Lokayukta in the state has asked the state government to complete the appointment process in three months, not two months as reported earlier.
Some lawyers familiar with the case Tuesday had told reporters that the SC had given a two-month deadline to Odisha. However, a written order Wednesday clarified that the government had been given three months to appoint the Lokayukta. The written order as passed by a three-judge SC bench said, “As the Odisha Lokayukta Act has been brought into effect July 7, 2018 and the relevant rules have been framed in light of what has been stated in the affidavit of the Chief Secretary of the state we direct that the follow-up measures leading to appointment of Lokayukta be completed within three months from today.”
The order also said that as per the latest affidavit, it was stated that the Odisha Lokayukta (terms of the search committee and conditions of appointment of members and fees and allowances payable to its members) rules, 2018 had been duly framed and that steps had been taken for constitution of the selection committee and on receipt of recommendations appointments would be made.
