Bhadrak, Dec 4: The Orissa Human Rights Commission Thursday directed four doctors to be present in its court January 6, 2015, in connection with an incident in which the left hand of a woman of Soro area was amputated after an injection was administered to her during tubectomy.
Ranjita Sahu of Kumarpur in Balasore district had been administrated an injection during tubectomy and later her left hand got infected and doctors had to amputate the hand.
Taking the incident seriously, the rights panel has served notices on the chief district medical officer and the sterilization specialist of Balasore district headquarters hospital, superintendent and head, surgery department, of the SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Sangita Swain, Secretary of Human Rights Watch, had drawn the attention of the rights panel to this incident March 7. Admitting Swain’s plea, the rights panel had registered a case in its court.
The commission had July 7 also sought a detailed report on Ranjita’s treatment. The CDMO had furnished all requisite details to the commission. However, the court failed to know why the victim’s hand was amputated and under what circumstances. The court wanted the doctors involved in the treatment of the woman to clarify their stand in court.
An ASHA worker had brought Ranjita to a family planning camp at Agarpada where she was administered an injection. Her hand got infected and later was amputated at SCB Medical College and Hospital. Ranjita had also lodged a complaint with the local police station in this regard. Police have also registered a case.
