Basta, July 16: Tension ran high on Basta hospital premises in Balasore district Thursday when a girl allegedly died after being administered a wrong injection. Irate over the incident, local people laid siege to the hospital for about five hours.
According to reports, Namita Gochhayat (18), daughter of Paritosh Gochhayat, of Silang police station area was admitted to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
A doctor treated her after diagnosing her ailment as food poisoning. Another doctor on night-duty, Manik Ratan Pradhan, prescribed an injection for the patient. Namita’s family members purchased the prescribed injection and gave it to the nurse on night duty.
Her family members alleged that nurse Sujata Mallick gave another injection to the patient instead of the one prescribed by the doctor. Namita died just 15 minutes after being administered the injection.
The family members demanded from the nurse that the sample of the injection be given to them. But she refused to give the remnant vial of the injection, the family alleged.
Thereafter, the bereaved family along with the local people created a ruckus in the hospital and staged a demonstration, demanding compensation for the death. The agitation continued from the morning till 11 am, Thursday.
Basta police rushed to the hospital and tried to pacify the agitating people. The agitators relented after the medical officer-in-charge assured the people of suspending the concerned nurse. Chief district medical officer Bhabani Shankar Das instructed the medical officer to take steps in this regard.
The nurse, however, dismissed the allegation leveled against her. The medical officer said the suspension report has been sent to the CDMO.
According to reports, the hospital has several times hit the headlines for the wrong reasons, even as the 50-bed healthcare centre is plagued by multiple problems. It is learnt that six patients have died due to alleged medical negligence in the hospital in the last six months. PNN
