Sambalpur, April 22: Eleven days after the death of three women post Cesarean sections, the VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla in the district courted controversy yet again, after another woman died Tuesday night following delivery due to alleged medical negligence.
Family members of Mamata Pandey (28) of Snehapalli village under Dhanakauda block in the district alleged that she was a victim of medical negligence and reaction of medicines.
The doctor, who was treating the woman, had advised her family not to go for postmortem of the body. Such action of the doctor raised question over the quality of treatment in the premier government hospital of the district, creating sharp resentment on the hospital premises.
The hospital authorities are tight-lipped over the issue. According to sources, the higher officials of the hospital were directed to keep themselves away from the media.
As per the allegations made by the victim’s family, Mamata, wife of Hari Pandey, was admitted to the hospital April 20 morning after she suffered labour pain. Later, she gave birth to a baby girl through a cesarean section at 12.45 pm. The woman was in fine fettle post surgery.
However, one-and-a-half-an-hours later, the woman collapsed due to excessive bleeding. After the doctor was apprised of the matter, the woman was administered two units of blood. However, her condition worsened further and she was shifted to the intensive care unit of the hospital that evening, where she was administered one more unit of blood. However, the woman died at 11:30 pm that night.
After her death, the doctor, who was treating Mamata, asked the family members to immediately take the body home and conduct the final rites. Finding no options, the hapless family took the body to their home.
VSS superintendent Dr Laxmikant Dash said Mamata was admitted to the ICU due to excessive bleeding. Despite being provided with necessary treatment and medicines, she died at night. He added that if he receives any written complaint about medical negligence, a probe would be conducted and actions would be taken against the guilty.
It may be mentioned here that three women had died in the hospital five hours after they underwent cesarean section in the hospital April 10.
In another incident, Sasmita Bhoi of Kujapali under Atabita police station in Bargarh had also died in the hospital post delivery April 3. She had delivered a baby boy after a Cesarean section at 12.30 pm April 3. However, she suddenly fell sick at around 7 pm and as no doctor attended to her, she breathed her last.
