Binjharpur: A 34-year-old youth belonging to Rahas Guhali village under this police station in Jajpur district committed suicide allegedly under loan burden late Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Girishchandra Samal. He is survived by his widow and two daughters.
The deceased’s brother Biswajit said Girish had taken Rs 30,000 crop loan from Bandhan Bank and Rs 60,000 from Union Bank of India for pisciculture. However, he suffered loss both in agriculture and pisciculture. He had apprised the bank authorities about the loss. However, the authorities asked him to repay the loan as he does not have crop insurance.
He had also borrowed Rs 2 lakh from a local self help group (SHG) to construct a house; Rs 35,000 from another SHG and Rs 15,000 from a cooperative society for business activities. Girish had also taken a loan to buy an auto rickshaw from IndusInd Bank.
As Girish was unable to pay the monthly installments to repay the loans, he was under mental pressure.
Saturday evening, Girish had discussed with his family members about the loan burden. However, sin the night he hanged himself by a rope in his room, Biswajit added.
His family members rescued him and rushed him to the community health centre here for treatment. However, doctors declared him brought dead.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Jajpur district headquarters hospital for postmortem.
Sub-inspector Ajay Kumar Mohanty, who was the investigating officer, said an unnatural death case has been registered.
Local sarpanch Umakant Mallick said Girish committed suicide after he suffered losses in agriculture and business.
He further added that local people provide loans at exorbitant interest rates. Many people take loans from them finding no other options. Most often, they take extreme steps like ending lives and fleeing their houses failing to repay the loans.
