Paikmal: A 23-yearold youth was arrested in Bargarh district for allegedly establishing a physical relationship with a widow on the promise of marriage and refusing to marry her after she became pregnant.
The accused, Nirmal Bentkar of Kechhodadar village under Paikmal police limits, was arrested after the woman’s family lodged a complaint.
Police said the two had been in a relationship for about one and a half years. The woman alleged that Bentkar repeatedly promised to marry her and, on that assurance, established a physical relationship with her.
She is now about six months pregnant. Village elders and relatives reportedly tried to resolve the matter, urging the accused to marry the woman, but he and his family allegedly refused.
Police registered a case and arrested the accused. After a medical examination, he was produced before the Padampur court.
