Bhanjanagar: An 18-year-old youth was reportedly beaten to death by his friends who subsequently dumped the body in a farmland following an altercation during a picnic at Akhupadar village under this police limits in Ganjam district Saturday night.
The matter came to the fore after family members informed the police. The deceased was identified as Sagar Nayak.
A police team Sunday morning visited the village and seized the body from the farmland. A case of murder was registered based on a complaint by Sagar’s father and the body was sent for post-mortem. Police detained three youths for interrogation while further investigation into the incident was launched.
According to family members, Sagar’s friends called him for a picnic while he was at home Saturday morning. Later, six of them went to a picnic spot near the village. Over unknown reasons, Sagar and one of his friends broke into an altercation over some issue.
The youth, along with two of his friends, reportedly attacked Sagar and beat him to death. Later, they dumped the body in a farmland and returned home. The incident spread outrage throughout the village.
Bhanjanagar SDPO Utkal Keshari Das, IIC Aswini Kumar Sahu, along with a police team, reached the village and took stock of the situation. SDPO Das confirmed that the youths had beaten Sagar to death following an altercation. “While three have been detained, we are still investigating if others were involved or not. Steps will be taken after the confirmation of involvement of Sagar’s other friends,” he added. PNN
