Kendrapara: A youth from Bhekta village under Talachua Maraine police station in Kendrapara district was stripped and brutally beaten up by a group of locals at a kangaroo court in the presence of the local Sarpanch Monday.
The incident came to the fore after a video of the entire incident went viral on social media.
Sources said the youth named Sudhanshu Jena was engaged by a prawn dealer, Bulu Jena of Sikaripahi village and developed love relationship with the latter’s daughter. Later, the youth and the girl had eloped to Bhubaneswar.
Monday, a group of locals of Talachua village nabbed the youth in Bhubaneswar and took him to the village. Later, he was taken to the panchayat office premises and confined there for hours. Later, the youth was stripped and beaten up with a wooden plank in a kangaroo court front of his father Sadananda Jena and the local sarpanch. Moreover, they also made a video of his naked body and uploaded the same on social media.
The kangaroo court directed the youth’s father to pay a fine amount of Rs 2 lakh and when the latter expressed his inability, he was asked to deposit Rs 50,000 within half an hour.
According to Sadananda Jena, when Sudhanshu came to know that his naked video was made viral, he felt humiliated and depressed and even attempted to end his life by consuming poison. However, timely action by the youth’s father and elder brother prevented him to commit suicide.
Later, the youth, who sustained injuries in the attack, was later admitted to Talachua primary health centre (PHC) for treatment. He was subsequently shifted to Rajnagar CHC and later to district headquarters hospital.
However, no police complaint has been filed in this connection till yet.
