Bhubaneswar: The Odisha capital here set itself Monday to witness Zero Shadow Day, an interesting celestial event when there will be no shadow of any object/living being under the Sun. It will recur elsewhere in the state on different days in the months of May, June and July.
Denizens of the Temple City waited eagerly for 11.43am to experience the rare event. It will happen here again July 22 at 11.53am; in Cuttack around the same time May 22 and July 22; in Burla at 11.52am on May 28 and 11.56am July 15; at Balangir 11.54am . May 23 and 12.04pm . July 20 ; in Baripada 11.41am . May 31 and 11.49am . July 12 ; and Rourkela at 11.58am . June 2 and 11.56am . July 10 in Rourkela.
The Zero Shadow Days occur during Uttarayan when the Sun moves northwards and Dakshinayan when the Sun moves southwards.
Earth’s rotational axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5° to the axis of revolution around the Sun. At a time when Sun’s location moves from 23.5° North to 23.5° South of Earth’s equator, all places whose latitude equals the angle between the Sun’s location and the equator experience Zero Shadow Days.
