Bargarh: A motor accident claims tribunal (MACT) here directed an insurance firm in Nagaland to pay Rs 42.83 lakh compensation to the survivors of an OSAP jawan who died in a road accident at Tileibani in Deogarh November 14, 2015.
Prafulla Behera, a native of Katapali in Bargarh, was mowed down by a speeding Nagaland-registered truck at Tileibani November 14, 2015. Profusely bleeding, he succumbed to injuries on the spot. The district court-cum-MACT judge Sudipta Acharya directed the insurance firm in Nagaland to pay the compensation to the survivors of the deceased jawan. The matter came up before the tribunal after the family members of the slain jawan filed a petition praying for compensation.
Out of the total compensation money, Rs 10 lakh will be deposited for a period of six years in the name of the deceased jawan’s widow in any nationalized bank, the judge said, adding a fixed deposit of Rs 15 lakh be made in the name of the deceased’s minor daughter till she attains majority.
The judge also ordered a fixed deposit of Rs 7 lakh and Rs 5 lakh in the names of Urmila Behera and Bhikari Behera respectively, the parents of the deceased.
The rest of the money has to be equally distributed in cheques among the above four survivors of the deceased, the judge said. Interest at a rate of 7 per cent per annum will be paid from the date of filing of the petition, the court said.
